7 Signs of Quality When Buying Secondhand Clothing
By The Thrifty Closets · 1 June 2026
The secret to great thrifting isn’t luck — it’s knowing what to look for. These seven tells will help you spot genuinely well-made secondhand clothing in seconds.
1. Natural fibres
Cotton, wool, linen, silk and leather breathe better, last longer and age more gracefully than synthetics. Check the listing’s material field first.
2. Dense, even stitching
Quality garments have small, tight, even stitches with no loose threads. Sparse or wandering stitching is a sign of rushed, low-cost manufacturing.
3. Finished seams
Look for French seams or overlocked edges that won’t fray. Raw, unfinished insides are a red flag on anything that isn’t intentionally raw-hemmed.
4. Pattern matching
On striped or checked pieces, well-made garments line the pattern up across seams and pockets. It’s a small detail that signals real craftsmanship.
5. Real hardware
Metal zips, horn or shell buttons, and sturdy rivets outlast plastic equivalents — and are worth repairing rather than replacing.
6. Weight and structure
Quality fabric usually has a satisfying weight and holds its shape. Hold the photos up against the listed measurements to judge the cut.
7. Honest condition grading
The best secondhand sellers grade condition transparently. We use four grades — NWT, Excellent, Good, Fair — and list exact measurements on every item, so there are no surprises.
Knowing these signs turns thrifting from a gamble into a skill. Put them to use on our latest arrivals.
